Apprenticeship Program Overview

The Apprenticeship Program grew out of a workshop in 2005 sponsored by the Ambergris Caye Education and Support Committee. We talked to 100 young adults to find out which key issues were facing them in San Pedro. One of the many issues the young adults talked about was finding employment, especially finding their first job and learning a trade. So the idea for the Apprenticeship Program was born. Critical to the program was the involvement of the local business community. Business Partners in a new venture that were willing to take a chance on an untested youth and provide training for them to take into the job market, to give the apprentice a basic understanding of what it is to be a successful employee, and to give them a basic understanding of a particular job.

The Apprentices will work in their chosen fields to learn a trade. During the 12-week apprenticeship they will work a minimum of 20 hours a week for a total of 240 hours. In addition to the training they will receive a small stipend. The Apprentices have two evaluations during training to assist in identifying areas of growth and potential for growth. Mentors support the Apprentices during the program by introducing them to their Business Partner, being present during the evaluations, and being there for the Apprentices to talk to if they have questions or there is a problem. The ACES Committee has committed to assist Apprentices after the program has ended, as needed.

A Note From the Mayor:

Through this medium the San Pedro Town Council confirm their full support towards the Apprentice Program San Pedro Town. The Apprentice Program is geared in helping youths gain hands-on exposure and basic job training skills that are needed and are essential in today's work field. In order for an intern to have successfully completed this program they completed 240 hours (12 twenty-hour weeks) of on the job training in the specific area and 24 hours of general classroom instruction. The apprentice program is opened to youths between the ages of 15 to 20.

As Mayor of this town we applaud the wonderful efforts that are being done by these volunteers to steer our youngsters on the right path. The Apprentice Program has proven to be very successful in their mission and deserve all the support from the community that they can get. Again, we reiterate our commitment to this program.

Elsa Paz (Ms.)
Mayor

A Note From the Chamber of Commerce:

Our Ambergris Caye Chamber of Commerce is proud of its Education and Support Committee (ACES) whom has dedicated itself to youth education. The ACES program of Apprenticeship gives inexperienced youth a chance at a hands-on real-life work. The businesses that have welcomed these young people into their businesses have allowed them to be trained, and in many cases have kept them on as employees. Our Chamber appreciates the members of this committee and the those businesses for their efforts.

Thank you,
Tom L. Vidrine
